The Brabo of Antwerp

The name Antwerpen is believed to originate from a folklore tradition involving a giant named Antigoon, who demanded tolls from boatmen and severed their hands if they refused. The giant was killed by a hero named Silvius Brabo, who threw Antigoon's hand into the Scheldt river. This legend is commemorated by a statue in Antwerp's main market square, the Grote Markt. However, the true origin of the name is uncertain.
