Roman Hippodrome

Did you know that Tyre was once an island city
and was not connected to mainland Lebanon?

The Roman Empire Hippodrome took my breath! We visited the Al-Bass Roman ruins site for the first time in September 2023. Our home base was the beautiful Dar Alma in Tyre.

I've got a fascinating insight into Tyre for you: So, did you know that Tyre used to be an island city, totally separate from mainland Lebanon? It's incredible! Alexander the Great even built a road to connect it to the mainland. This place is steeped in history, with Roman mosaics, ancient ruins, and a thriving purple dye industry back in the day.

The hippodrome itself is fascinating! It is considered to be one of the largest and best preserved Roman hippodromes of its type in the Roman world. The start boxes and parts of the median strip with an obelisk on it are still visible. Each end of the course is marked by still existing stone turning posts. Charioteers had to make this circuit seven times.

Siege of Tyre

We've explored the city, its historical sites, and even the potential for tourism, all captured in the video. But Tyre's still a hidden gem that could use some more attention, and I'm here to support it.

When visiting, make sure to check the Honorific Arc, the Medusa Sarcophagus and the Tyre beach coast!
